Warm Bodies (2013) Dir. Jonathan Levine

Warm Bodies.... This blog post would be better titled "Is this a film I want to watch, or am I just curious about it because it exists".

A disclaimer of sorts may be in order. I am not a necrophiliac  I may have had a small crush on Joey from Return of the Living Dead part 2 (pre and post mortem), and forever have a small heart flutter reserved for The Torn Prince from Thirteen Ghosts, and yes, it's true that I did once read a Heathers fanfiction about Veronica's liaisons with a ghostly Jason Dean....BUT I'm not a necrophiliac... Glad that's sorted.

Warm Bodies was brought to my attention by an academic friend of mine about six months ago. We laughed over the seemingly voracious predilection of Hollywood to make a romance film for every single supernatural or usually horror specific character. "When will it end!" we chuckled together, and how.

Up until recently, I had only seen still images of Nicholas Hoult as a very pale, albeit strangely attractive man in a red hoodie. Today, procrastination got the better of me while I was attempting to redraft a proposal of mine and I got to wondering if Warm Bodies had come out yet, and if it had, what people's opinions of it were.

Whizzing over to imdb, I found that you could view a trailer, the first four minutes of the film and some clips, so I did what any person that is desperate not to continue working would do, had a gander andddd.... I am still really unsure of how to feel about this! I remembered when Shaun of the Dead was released and Simon Pegg called it a 'zomromcom'... As far as I remember though, there was certainly no zombie on human love action going on in that. Then I started thinking practically, if someone of the living and breathing persuasion decided to embark on a romance with a zombie, who by definition of being, well... dead, would not have a heartbeat, how would said parties um.... consummate the relationship?

It was around this point that I realised I was thinking too deeply and needed to maybe move away from the internet for a while.

I did a little bit of research and found that the film is based on a novel of the same name. Zooks, I thought, this is more widespread than I anticipated. I thought about trying to find out if there is an underground zombie porn clique... I thought about it for a whole minute. Only thought, I need to make that clear. I also found out that John Malkovich is in the film... We can trust John Malkovich right? John Malkovich doesn't readily star in crap? RIGHT?!?!

From what I can surmise from the brief trailer, this looks to be a film less sensationally playing on the ooh la la, his a stiff with a stiffy premise and more exploring a zombies want for human connection, which really... is quite cute, and may have slightly melted my ice queen-ish heart.... I am not so secretly hoping for a bit of a zombie/human pash-up... but that's just me.
